Well, what do you know, the son of a bitch is another Goldman Sachs alum. If you have any delusions that Barack Obama cares about the human rights abuses in Sudan, consider yourself mistaken.
Barrys pick for Undersecretary of State for Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs, Robert Hormats, who happens to be Goldman Sachs’ international vice chairman, was deeply involved in making sure the Chinese oil company CNPC, was able to skirt sanctions against the throat slashing, clit hacking Sudanese regime and offer an IPO that helped helps fuel the continued horror against Christians, women and other perceived enemies of state, including the cradle of Sudanese genocide, Darfur.
I won’t go into the details of international finance; you can read it here if you want, but basically, Hormats, as an agent for Goldman Sachs wriggled around the sanctions imposed upon the Sudanese regime by helping CNPC create a subsidiary out of thin air. What’s that mean? The parent company is deeply involved in oil production in Sudan, helping to fund the genocidal Sudanese government. The world balked at the thought of this company going public. Enter Hormats, whose firm was underwriting the IPO scheme, assured the world with all clout Goldman Sachs could muster that this subsidiary would be so separate from the the parent company that the Sudan government would never see a benefit, and therefore not have a way around the imposed sanctions.
How do you think that worked out? CNPC and its subsidiary, Petro China are so inextricably linked that you can barely tell them apart. I’m sure Goldman Sachs made some decent coin though, even with the fines imposed by the SEC for the illegalities Hormats engaged in while putting together this scheme.
Sure, it’s messy, it’s detailed, and it’s precisely why most Americans will never pay attention to who this guy is, and where he came from. Fattening China over here, turning a blind eye to genocide over there-well, apparently Obama thinks that would be a fine addition to his administration. Not many people in the mainstream know who you are Hormats. I’ll introduce them for you.
