The only surprise was how badly the Democrats were beaten up. Not even the man of peace could stop the onslaught.
The polls showed Bob McDonnell up big in Virginia, and those numbers held true. In what can only be described as a landslide, he pancaked his Democratic opponnet in a state that Barack Obama won handily just a year ago. The campaigning, the commercials being run, that looked more like Obama campaign ads than Creigh Deeds, obviously did no good at all.
In a more surprising turn of events, the New Jersey governors race turned out to be a mild rout in and of itself. Chris Christie, the Republican challenger, defeated incumbent ex-Goldman Sachs alum John Corzine (those Goldman guys are popping up everywhere), rather handily, and although the White House is trying to play this embarrassment down, everyone knows that last night had to sting. Obama sent in his goons to try and prop up Corzine, and even made several personal appearances himself in an effort to get his pal re-elected. None of it helped. In fact, by looking at the numbers, you could make a case that Corzine hitched his wagon to someone who is too unpopular at the moment to sway an election. Democrats are playing this down, citing historical cycles that show this kind of thing happens routinely. Maybe, but margin of loss has to be disconcerting for the Dems. There is even spin that this was a bad night for the Republicans, because it showed that the extreme side of the right was fracturing the party.
Huh? What is being referred to is New Yorks 23rd district race. That pitted Democrat Bill Owens against virtual completely unknown Doug Hoffman, who was narrowly defeated in a questionable election by any standard. If you recall, RINO leftist Dede Scozzafava was exposed during the campaign as being a closet Democrat, and those suspicions panned out even more remarkably than first believed. Hoffman jumped in the race, and that was all she wrote for Scozzafava. She dropped out just days before the election, but she certainly was not out of the race.
Showing her true colors, Scozzy turned around and endorsed the Democrat Owens, even recording some robo calls and appearing with him at a campaign event. No, she is not a Republican, no matter what Newt Gingrich says. He wasn’t the only one that got it dead wrong either. Stay tuned guys, we haven’t forgotten about you. $1 million down the drain on Scozzafava, and she turns out to be to the left of many incumbent Dems. This didn’t bode well for Hoffman. Although polls showed him ahead before last night, he lost in a close race. Just an observation. Even exit polls showed that Hoffman had a lead last night. But he lost. Just an observation. Fox news showed the precincts reporting last night, and at a few points, the number of precincts reporting increased, but the numbers did not change. Just an observation. Scozzafava got around 7000 votes, even though she was out of the race. 7000 would have put Hoffman over the top and he would be on his way to Congress. Those votes should have gone to Hoffman.Just an observation. So a RINO Democrat lefty, with a husband union organizer took enough votes away from Hoffman to swing the election. Money well spent, eh Repubs?
On the other hand, here’s a guy Hoffman, literally a guy off the street, unfamiliar with local issues, lived in the district only on a technicality, had the personality of a puddle of water (did you see him on Fox the other night? Good grief), entered late, and didn’t run much of a campaign. In fact, grassroots supporters ran a more effective campaign independent of Hoffman, and nearly pulled it off. If Owens thinks he won something, he should think again. Hoffman was a nobody, and although his values were sound, let’s face it, he was a shitty candidate, and still almost pulled out a victory, despite the Scozzafava/ACORNian/Biden coalition that stood against him. Take each one of those names and realize what kind of Frankenstein Hoffman was up against. A few “atta’ boy” cheers from Republicans at the 11th hour is not what Hoffman needed. He needed hardcore campaign help, and he didn’t get it. He’s no politician. He needed help and the Republicans let him drown. What will Owens do when a real opponent runs against him? We’ll find out next year.
If anybody thinks that the Republican party is in disarray because conservatives are taking over where moderates should reign should get their facts straight. This is about cleaning house. Disarray? On the contrary, this is called reorganizing and re-energizing. If you consider Dede Scozzafava a moderate, if that is the moderate bench mark, then call me extreme right.

I am no political expert, but it seems to me that if Hoffman had gained the full backing of the Republican Party and it’s campaign apparatus, he would have won this contest. He nearly did in spite of having virtually no help. Maybe the GOP can come up with a much better candidate in 2010.
As for Newt Gingrich, I think it is high time he disappeared into the political sunset. He is so far out of touch with conservatives, it isn’t even funny.
The Republicans were booted out of office for a reason. There’s work to be done. I think a message was sent yesterday. Even with a Hoffman loss yesterday, both parties have to realize that no seat is safe.
I agree with Larry, if the Republican party would have backed Hoffman more completely he would have won. But I still consider his loss a win, an unknown political novice was able to expose and topple a liberal Republican and that is a victory. While he fell short in the end, he put RINOs on notice, we are coming after you.
Hoffman could have bagged this baby…he needed help and the GOP let him sink. Really, Newt backing Dede? What the heck was that all about?
Mr. Pink Eyes, you are so right. His loss is a win…a huge slap in the face to those that believe that they don’t have to tow the line.
