For those of you out in the streets demanding amnestia for la raza, you might want to think about the cannibalistic ramifications of that kind of ethno-centrism.
You’ve heard the term, jobs Americans won’t do, and if there is any truth at all that phrase, then you could theoretically apply it to American born Latinos. A report released by California Immigrant Policy Center presents some sobering facts on immigration in California. According to the study, conducted by the Program for Environmental and Regional Equity at USC, immigrants have a lower unemployment rate than American born Latinos and Asians in California. This piece will focus on the Latinos, because frankly, I don’t see any Asians in the street demanding amnesty. The report says that 84% of immigrant men were employed, compared to just 78% of American born Latinos and Asians. Those numbers changed when women were included, but in the immigrant community, not all women come here to work. Let’s face it, that’s a cultural phenomenon, especially in patriarchial societies such as those South of the border.
With the jobless rate for American born males at 22%, you would think that amnesty, or a path to citizenship, or any kind of similar talk would be out of the question. For many it is, but at the same time, you have to wonder if these numbers were widely available if the tune would change. In all fairness though, there are other factors to consider. I was unable to find this report online, so either I’m looking in the wrong place, or it just isn’t available on the Internet. What can be postulated from the CBS report would be speculation at this point, but these points are likely valid.
Firstly, in all likelihood, not all of these immigrants are illegal. Many may be legal, and many may be well educated, here on H-1b visas or some other program. Secondly, we know of the plight of American born Latinos in California. In Los Angeles, the high school dropout rate is 50%-or even higher depending on who’s running the numbers. That doesn’t bode well for employment. Also, some of these jobs that immigrants hold may be low paying, no benefit jobs that are hard to fill. It’s possible, but in the current economic climate, I can’t think of what kind of job that may be. So there are other factors, but the specter of 22% unemployment has to weigh heavily on any community.
With immigration reform looming in congress, these numbers stand to get even more skewed. With a flood of immigrants more than willing to take the same job at a lower wage, a reform bill such as the one currently being proposed is certain to make an already high unemployment rate skyrocket. I’ve said before that open borders does more harm than good. Now a study has been done to prove my point. There’s no benefit here. One group is benefiting at the expense of another. Unless American born Latinos and Asians are just not up to the task (???) You tell be boys…We clearly have enough immigrants for now.

Shut the gates. Mexico should not be dictating anything here. Enough with the entitlements.
Mexico should educate their countrymen. They should provide for them as well. It has always been very interesting to watch the President of Mexico exit a very wealthy man.
I realize that Mexico is but one of many other Hispanic countries that wants to have their economy subsidized by US $$$.
I agree. Closing down the borders would force the issue. It would be sink or swim for Mexico.
