I’ve said before that remedies for discrimination usually involve discrimination against someone or something else to rectify the problem. I couldn’t have come up with a better example if I’d made it up. Don’t look for any content of your character here.
In a move that the Mexican government itself couldn’t have imagined, the feds, courtesy of the Department of Education are launching an investigation regarding allegations the the Los Angeles Unified School District violated the civil rights of English language learners. You heard that right, the LAUSD is going to be hammered for not pandering enough to illegal alien students-at the expense of everybody else.
Citing poor test scores of blacks and Latinos, the DOE suspects that not enough resources are being diverted away from whites and Asians to bring the former up to speed. Funny, it was they who included blacks as English learners.
Federal analysts will review how English learners are identified and when they are judged fluent enough to handle regular course work. They’ll examine whether English learners have qualified, appropriately trained teachers. And they’ll look at how teachers make math and science understandable for students with limited English.
What if they aren’t fluent enough? If they can’t speak English, then it’s up to the parents (many of who do not speak English either) to get those kids in an English immersion class so they can handle regular course work. It isn’t the responsibility for the LAUSD to educate Mexican children. And lets face it folks, this is L.A.; that’s exactly who we’re talking about. And what do they mean when they say make math and science understandable? That’s code for dumb it down. Barry can talk about education and math and science all he wants. This is what he’s actually doing about it.
The DOE is targeting schools on the West side of the San Fernando Valley. Anyone who lives in the area knows that the East side is mostly Latino, and what whites and Asians are left in the valley tend to be on the West side. Those are the schools they’re going after. Those are the ones with the biggest disparity in success rates between races. Yes, it’s all about la raza. What they’re looking to do is divert resources away from kids that actually can speak English and divert them to the illegal alien kids. And who’s civil rights are being violated there? As it is, English speaking kids are forced to slow down and hang back while the slower English learners try to catch up.
And if the dropout numbers are any indicator, they tend not to catch up. But those aren’t just English learners. Latinos and blacks (sorry, if you’re from Africa my apologies, but most black Americans are not) as a whole have a high dropout rate, English or no English. How do they explain that?
I remember Bill O’Reilly had a guest on his show and they discussed this very issue, but it was regarding the black community. According to his guest, to fly right and do well in school was tantamount to acting white, and the peer pressure to be just the opposite was a prime reason for the high dropout rates in the black community. That may be the case among Latinos as well, but there is the language factor. I remember seeing an interview with Fernando Valenzuela, the former Dodger great, who as a player, didn’t speak English. He now calls games for the Dodger’s Spanish audience, but now, he does speak English. When asked how long it took him learn the language, he said about a year. I’m sure he wasn’t a Rhodes scholar by then but he did speak the language. The illegal alien kids can’t take a year out and learn the language? Better yet, they can’t go home to their native country and get an education there, and do some good for their country?
No. Instead, border crossers dump their kids into Americans schools and expect the United States to not only educate the kids, but pay for to boot.
The LAUSD is about to layoff another 4000 employees. Surely teachers will be in that mix. What resources do they have to teach non-English speaking kids? The official numbers are about 1/3 are in this category, but anyone living here knows that the number of English deficient kids in the LAUSD is much higher. They just don’t have the resources to pander to them. And we’re talking about the most welcoming defacto Mexican school district in the country. If they can’t do it, imagine the rest of the country. Make no mistake about it; the LAUSD sucks, but the feds are focusing on ramping up the crown jewel of their self-destruction.
They better find a way to keep it going though. 1/4 of their budget comes from the Feds and they risk it all if they don’t steal from Peter to pay Paul. LAUSD, a corrupt, poorly run defacto Mexican district is in flames, and this just might finish them off. If you have kids in school, don’t get too comfortable. If the feds can pull this on the LAUSD, imagine what they can do in a town near you. Another stake going in the ground in preparation for the amnesty wave.

Do you realize that our universities give in state tuition to these kids from Mexico?

I remember a Dateline program two years ago that had video of the children from Mexico crossing the bridges daily to go to school in the US. DHS is told to back off.
BTW I have a huge beef with all of this b*s* in LA. English is not my first language. I did not learn English until I began first grade. I spent the majority of my earlier years in Mexico visiting my grandmother. I grew up in an all white middle class neighborhood with no other children. There was no Kinder when I went to school…no English as a second language garbage either. In other words, I didn’t speak much at the beginning of the year, but I valued education enough to pay very close attention to what the teacher was saying. It was not hard. It is called immersion. It works. I didn’t repeat any grade, and graduated early from high school.
Bilingual education has been the death of education in this country. It creates the sense of being a victim that is entitled. I taught at the college level for 26 years. I remember students who came to class with the attitude that I must cater to them in Spanish. The audacity still cracks me up. lol My class was taught in French and I would quickly show them the door if they wished not to work. Quite frankly, I always wondered how they managed to take the SAT? Some of my students were brilliant, but they most certainly had become trained to believe that they were entitled or pandered to in Spanish. I have always equated this with being enslaved. I would tell them, you don’t see the ACT or the SAT being given in Spanish, do you?
I don’t believe that I ever had anyone drop the class after being lectured on language skills. What MECHA and La Raza should be worried about is how this pandering enslaves these children for life. If you can’t read or write in English, you will not be able to move forward in life easily. It has become tiresome to listen to people complain about the “white” man.
AARRGH!!!!!!!! Excuse me? My grandparents and any immigrant who came here before the liberal loons took over learned English- on their own- as a matter of pride and survival. They came here to BE AMERICANS!
School needs to be taught in ENGLISH! (Unless it is a foreign language course) Immersion is the quickest way.
They’re integrating Mexico into the United States. How much more clear can it be?
You know it is bad when we have more Mexican National Flags flying than US.
Your blog has totally outdone anything else I ve read on this subject. Since I have read it, i have got a unclutterd view on this subject. I will reccomend some people I know who may also be very interested.
Man oh man, have I almost seen it all with this illegal immigration thing or what? I’m so tired of these people coming here and DEMANDING that they get better treatment, not equal but better treatment than the citizens of this country! I had to home school my children because LAUSD would not help me with my two disabled American children until I notified a advocacy group called T.A.S.K. and finally after years of struggling got home hospital (In a totally different district) for our daughter. My son was left by the wayside. They are corrupt all right.
I will do all I can to get some kind of order in this country with the illegals. I’m sick and tired of them leaching off us tax payers, especially when many of us aren’t doing that well finaincially ourselves right now. And to make matters worse? I live in San Fernando Valley which is Mexican Row now and they do not respect us Americans. They mock us! My husbands family have been living in this house since 1960 and it was a nice middle class neighborhood. Not anymore. I’m part latina and grew up in Venice area and went to LA schools. We were always taught english in our home and at school. I don’t remember this illegal thing ever being a problem until recent years. As far as I’m concerned they already have to many “rights” here and I want something done about it! I refuse to keep pushing 1 for english and my husband, who is more than qualified for the positions he applies for isn’t, according to these companies now which require you to be Bi-Lingual! What is this country coming to? I want America BACK!
I just learned that my son won’t get a Junior High Diploma from the LAUSD nor be allowed to walk in the ceremony because I homeschooled him in the sixth grade. I didn’t use an offsite academy and don’t have “official” grades. What I want to know is, are illegal alien kids with no proof of schooling allowed to walk in the ceremony?
