It wouldn’t be the first company that made a major gaff. From the Edsel, to new Coke, to Windows Vista, to credit default swaps, companies have made horrible decisions, and some survived their mistakes, and some…

WordPress has decided to update their stats program, making it ostensibly more functional and comprehensive for the bloggers that use it. Thus far, it hasn’t worked out. There are still “lost stats” out there, stats that blogs used to have but are now-somewhere. No body is sure where exactly. They’ve also made the widgets page over and it is now incredibly klunky. The Snap preview is not working as well.

All of this affects functionality obviously, and the stats issue undoubtedly affects page rank. It was an idea gone awry, and in this case it may bring down what is now a huge blogging platform. That’s unfortunate, because I think they’re just trying to enhance the WordPress experience. Too bad they tried to enhance it on a live system.

I know, I know, there are two things that can be fatal to a blog: poor content, and moving a blog. WordPress is having substantial problems with their blog stats, and although I will give them a little more time (not much), it looks like I may take the leap and move rjjrdq’s America.

Sure, the stats problem is the trigger, but I’ve been looking to move the blog for a while now, and after several unsuccessful attempts I will…try it again. I’m not 100% happy with this service, but I suspect I wouldn’t be 100% happy with any service, so if WordPress doesn’t get its act together soon, I’ll be moving here.

As I said, it’s risky to move a blog, and I’ve built up some readership and Google search ranking with the WordPress blog, but sooner or later I must break away and go it alone. We’ll see how it works out.
