Darrel Issa has done some good things, and he’s made some-questionable decisions. At yesterday’s House Government Oversight Committee hearing yesterday he did what he should have done months ago: Put Elijah Cummings in his place. That he did.
The living, breathing scandal also known as the IRS continues to simmer, namely because the hack at the center of the scandal, Lois Lerner won’t talk. A new series of explosive e-mails have surfaced and she was on Capital Hill to answer for them. Once again, on the advice of her attorney she pled the fifth. The emails centered around tea party groups and a developing “dangerous” situation. She wanted to conduct some kind of operation without it looking political. Issa wanted to know just what kind of operation it was. In fact, we all do, but Lerner isn’t talking. Then again, maybe not everybody wants to hear what Lerner has to say. It seems as though Elijah Cummings is up to old tricks and trying to turn every hearing into a political circus. Nice job, Elijah.
Once it became clear that Lerner was just going to read her take the fifth speech after every question, Issa shut down the hearing. But Cummings claimed to have a question, so Issa actually did let him speak, contrary to popular reports. Cummings didn’t have a question, but he had plenty to say. Issa wasn’t having it. Instead of a question, he accused Issa and Republicans of a one sided investigation, directly called Issa a liar and said that he was hiding something. Cummings had time to speak previous to that exchange, but chose not to. You can hear Issa telling him that on the video clip. Remember, this was all after the hearing was adjourned. But Issa only cut him off after realizing-very quickly that Cummings was up to his old tricks. And Issa has said as much. He thinks it was planned political theater.
Elijah Cummings has been throwing roadbocks in front of Darrell Issa from day one. He was trouble at that first TARP hearing, and has pulled the same stunts regarding Benghazi, Fast and Furious, and every other hearing where his political faction was clearly in hot water. His job is to block and redirect everything Issa is trying to do, and so far, the GOC has provided revelations, but little else. Whether that is Cummings’ doing or other political forces is up for discussion. In any event, he’s not helping.
Just about the only ones upset about Issa cutting that goon’s mic are Democrats and liberals that want Issa fired because he exists. Keep in mind that Issa has been putting up with for over two years. What we saw was most likely the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. I can only imagine what goes on behind the scenes. Having a clown like Elijah Cummings on the comittee is like climbing a mountain with a hundred pound bag of rocks on your back. It’s a long, hard slog.
There are more hearings coming up, and there will be more of Elijah Cummings. Unfortunately for him, it looks like the Republicans will actually gain seats in November, and he will continue his role as the whiny roadblock on the committee. Good luck Darrell, you’re going to need it.
